On Aug. 13 Council of the Region of Queens Municipality approved of $60,000 for maintenance, mechanical upgrades and consulting fees from Queens Place Emera Centre.
Of that money, $40,000 came from the Special Capital Reserve and $20,000 from the Building Canada Fund. The Building Canada Fund came from the federal government.
Dedicated piping for the ice battery system is required to ensure that the equipment is functioning at full capacity and installation of sprinkler heads is also required.
This year was the first that ice was kept in the centre for the summer. Queens Place Emera Centre Manager Steve Burns says because of this, it was found that the ice battery was not functioning properly.
“It’s determined that additional piping is required to allow that system to run affectively and efficiently,” says Burns.
Consultants were hired to find the problem with the system. The system is not defective but the required amount of piping for a full year of ice usage was not installed.
The piping will help bring the electricity costs per month down.
