The town will pay $2,200 to have asbestos removed from the Old Digby Academy before the full on demolition begins.
Digby town council has awarded the contract to Dean Suave Property Management of Cornwallis Park with the work to be completed by this Wednesday.
The asbestos is located in the boilerroom in the basement of the school.
The report to council by Special Constable Richard Parry says there is 300 square feet of asbestos in the building – 240 sq. ft on the ceiling and 72 sq. ft on one wall.
Parry told council that Sauve has experience removing asbestos from buildings in Cornwallis Park.
Parry believes the work will take less than two days.
The town also received a bid of $3,823.77 from Maritime Remediation in Yarmouth and a bid of $3,200 from Envirobate from Bedford.
The tenders for the rest of the demolition close this Wednesday, Aug. 14.
The cost of the demolition will be paid for by the town but added to the tax bill of the property owners, Questionable Ventures Incorporated.
