A brand launch for Devour Food Film Festival was held July 31 at the Al Whittle Theatre.

Speakers voiced their support of this initiative, while Senator Kelvin Ogilvie announced the federal government would be contributing $60,000 to the festival through ACOA’s Business Development Program. The province has also kicked in $90,000, while Wolfville contributed $5,000 and the Nova Scotia Slow Food Board added $3,500.

Ogilvie, who attended Acadia University, spoke of Wolfville as a unique place with many attractions, and its potential to become a hot spot for international tourists.

“This festival will help develop this area as a preferred destination,” he said.

Christie Mainhouse, representing Economic and Rural Development and Tourism, who announced the provincial government’s donation to the festival.

“Films have an ability to transport, educated and move people,” said Mainhouse.

Janice Ruddock, with Tastes of Nova Scotia, agreed with that assessment.

“This is the start of something really great,” she said.

Festival co-founders Michael Howell and Lia Renaldo believe the rebranding will attract more people to the growing festival. Approximately 75 people from around the globe have already submitted movies for consideration.

“I believe that this festival can become the Sundance of the north,” said Howell.

The festival is slated to begin Nov. 13 with a gala opening in the Fountain Commons building at Acadia University.
