The organizers of Wolfville’s revamped food film festival are holding a brand launch on July 31 at the Al Whittle Theatre.

The event will run for two hours, from 5–7 p.m. There are plans to screen the short Italian film Loss of Taste (Italy). Previously the Slow Motion Food Film Festival, the 2013 edition is slated for Nov. 13-17.

Speaking to town council recently, Lia Renaldo said the festival will shine a spotlight on Wolfville. She and co-organizer chef Michael Howell are aiming to round it out with out more food events.

The final film entry deadline is Aug. 23. The advisory board, she said, is made up of key players from the film, business and culinary sectors, including honorary members director Robert Kenner (Food, Inc.) and actor/director Jason Priestley.

In addition to the planned 30 screenings of food films from around the world, the festival will expand to include a program of industry sessions, farmer’s market events, wine tours, chef demos, producer visits and special dinners.

“We encourage the world of cinema and culinary arts to join us annually in Wolfville to celebrate this exciting collision of food and film. We are aiming to become one of the preeminent niche film festivals in the world through the enjoyment of gastronomic experiences, presentations of dynamic film and multimedia offerings and programming industry-boosting educational and networking opportunities,” said Howell.

Howell is co-chair of Slow Food Canada, and for 10 years he owned and operated the Tempest Restaurant in Wolfville. Rinaldo has been involved in the film industry for over 20 years.

The Slow Motion Food Film Festival took place in 2009 and 2011. A volunteer committee in Wolfville is at work on a Slow Food or Cittaslow designation for the community.

Jim Morgenstern told town council there are currently 10 designations in North America and he believes Wolfville could achieve the designation.
