A Vaughn, ON native has committed to play for the basketball Axemen this fall.

Gianmarco Luciani, a six-foot-five, 210-pound guard who graduates this year from Villanova College in King City, ON, also played for the Etobicoke Thunder Elite U-19 club team and led the team in both scoring and rebounding this past season.

Given that he was also recruited by St. F.X. and Cape Breton in this conference, as well as Ottawa and Bishop’s, head coach Steve Baur said he’s thrilled Luciani has chosen Acadia.

“Gianmarco is a great athlete who will help us on the perimeter with his ability to attack the rim and rebound from the guard spot,” Baur said.

“We believe he will be a big piece for us over the next few years, and are excited to have him join the program.”

Baur stressed that Luciani has “great size, strength and athletic ability” that gets him to the rim.

“Rebounding well from the guard position, he should make an impact on a veteran roster,” he added.

An all-round athlete, Luciani began to take basketball seriously in Grade 11, following a top-10 finish nationally in high jump in Grade 10. This past year, he was named a CISAA (Canadian Independent Schools Athletic Association) all-star.

“I’m very excited to come in as a freshman and help continue to strengthen the program,” Luciani said.

“I chose Acadia because I will have every opportunity to need to become successful in both academics and basketball. It was a pretty easy decision for me once I visited the campus and got a chance to see the community.”

Luciani’s commitment brings to three the number of recruits Baur has secured commitments from since Christmas.
