A benefit concert for the families of Miss Ally’s crew drew a large crowd to Beacon Church in Yarmouth on Saturday evening. The good will offering raised $4,231 for the families of the five crewmembers that lost their lives when the Miss Ally capsized on Sunday, Feb. 17. Dead are Captain Katlin Nickerson, Joel Hopkins, Steven Cole Nickerson, Tyson Townsend (all of Woods Harbour) and Billy Hatfield of Cape Sable Island.
The evening's master of ceremonies, David Sollows, described the event as an opportunity for the community to come together to honour the memory of the young men from a neighbouring county, and to remember that, as a coastal community, we share their history of lives lost to the sea. Indeed, as recently as two months ago, Wedgeport resident Mike Doucette was lost overboard during a routine fishing trip.
Donations to the event have been delivered to Beacon Church from across the country.
Seven groups performed including Chimera, The Yarmouth Shantyman, Peter and Janice Rowe, The Accidental Consort, Sim Rushton, The McLellan Sisters and Albert LeBlanc and The River Trio.
