The truck is 32 years old, and the costs of maintaining the equipment is growing, according to deputy chief David Payzant.
"Both mechanical maintenance and also maintaining a current certification for the ladder are proving to be a bit of a burden on the departments budget," he said.
He added they need a reliable piece of equipment to answer calls in the county.
A new truck is not a cheap proposition however. With costs easily reaching several hundred thousand dollars, the department is instead trying to source a second hand truck that will meet their needs.
When purchasing a truck, there are several factors the department needs to look at such as ladder length, tank size, pump capability, and number of manpower spaces available on the truck.
The department has a lead on a new truck though. The vehicle is a 1998 American LaFrance. The truck has a 75 foot ladder, 1500 gallons per minute pump, 500 gallon tank, and an enclosed cab with seating for 6 firefighters.

Over the weekend members of the department were in Chicago to inspect the truck's condition. The members will report back to the department and make their decision after that.
Whether they buy the truck in Chicago or have to source another one, the department still needs to raise funds for a new truck. A link on the department's website, www.liverpoolfirefighters.com, lets members of the public donate specifically towards the purchase of the new truck.
They have also started a Facebook Page, called Liverpool Firefighters Association Ladder Truck Fund. On it is a picture of the truck the department is interested in as well as fundraising updates.
The department got an early boost to their fundraising efforts as well. White Point Beach Resort held their annual fundraiser On the Rocks, and raised $2,500 to go towards the new truck.
