The Kentville and area African Education Committee

honoured five individuals recently to mark African History Month.

Peter Cromwell of Kingston is the African Nova Scotia representative on the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board.

Cromwell retired in 2011 after 33 years as a meteorologist with Environment Canada. He has been a human rights activist for over 35 years.

Wanda Fletcher of Aldershot is active in her community. She was a nurse at Valley Regional Hospital for three decades and now devotes her time to the food bank and the ladies auxiliary of the Kentville Legion.

Athlete and coach Bryan Gibson was a champion boxer in the 1970s. He started the Evangeline Trail Boxing Club in 1987. Gibson was inducted into the Canadian Boxing hall of Fame in 1991, coached at three Canada Winter Games and served in 2011 as an official.

Helen Gibson, of Gibson Woods, has been an educational assistant for almost 25 years. She currently helps to encourage students at Northeast Kings Educational Centre.

Lawrence Parker, a well-known student support worker and musician, was absent from the Feb. 16 event.

The committee hosted a community recognition celebration at the Louis Millett Complex in New Minas.
