Five runners, one walker and one stroller-rider showed up for the start of the Bear River Winter Carnival 5k fun run on Sunday, Feb. 17. One walker did the course before the others and one walker joined in at about the 2 km mark.

The first across the finish line was Tanya Park of Digby in 26:07.

Next came her son Spencer Merrett (7 months) just a split second ahead of his Dad Sean Merrett, who pushed Spencer’s stroller over the hilly course and finished in 27:33.

Jonathan Riley of Digby won the senior master’s division and came third overall in 32:25.

Lauren Kaiser of Deep Brook was fourth overall and the top junior runner with a time of 35:27.

Anna-Marie MacKenzie Kelly of Little River finished in a time of 37:23.

Carolyn Wagner of Bear River won the Golden Master Walker division with a time of 47:57.

Vanessa Wood of Bear River came in just under the hour mark at 59:55. Tina Jefferson accompanied her for the last half of the walk.

The course took the runners on a tour of Bear River with several locations offering great views of the river and the village and its hills and valleys.

The course started at the Oakdene, wound its way Around the Head of the Tide, up over Bell Road to the Upper Riverview Road, down the Bear River Back Road and back through the village and over the bridge with an uphill finish at the Oakdene again.

The 1st Digby Pathfinders organized and hosted the event.
