The Truro Bearcats edged the Yarmouth Mariners 3-2 in a shootout Saturday night in Truro.

Truro’s Kyle Morrison opened the scoring at 1:24 to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. Grant West scored at 4:56 to extend the lead to 2-0 after the first period.

Brandon Bussey (Cody Castro, Kyle Campbell) scored at 1:17 to get the Mariners on the scoreboard at 2-1. Braden Mercier (unassisted) scored at 3:12 to tie the game at 2-2 after the second period. There was no third period or overtime scoring. In the shootout, Zack Evans-Renaud (game winner) was the only player out of 10 to score in the shootout.

Truro went 0 for 4 on the powerplay while Yarmouth went 0 for 8.

Shayne Campbell stopped 23 of 25 shots for the tie while Travis Wilkins stopped 21 of 23 shots also in the tie.

Yarmouth remained one point ahead of Truro in the Eastlink Division with 72 points to Truro’s 71. Yarmouth was slated to play Summerside Sunday afternoon, Feb. 24, in Summerside while Truro had no game scheduled Sunday.

But things went from bad to worse for the Mariners as Summerside pounded them 7-0.

Danny Chiasson led the Western Capitals with 2 goals and 1 assist while Christopher Caissy added 1 goal and 2 assists. JP Harvey collected 2 goals. Colton Parsons chipped in with 3 assists.

Jonathan Aubertin (game winner) scored at 6:38 to give the Western Capitals a 1-0 lead. Chiasson scored at 12:29 to extend the lead to 2-0. Harvey (powerplay) scored at 17:15 to increase the lead to 3-0 after the first period. Caissy scored at 15:18 to widen the lead to 4-0, Scott Trask (powerplay) scored at 18:44 to make the score 5-0 after the second period. Harvey (second goal of game) scored at 12:35 to extend the lead to 6-0. Chiasson (powerplay, second goal of game) rounded out the scoring at 14:05.

Summerside went 3 for 8 on the powerplay while Yarmouth went 0 for 4.

Kevin Bailie stopped all 21 shots for the Win while Travis Wilkins (40:00) stopped 15 of 20 shots in the loss before being replaced by Chase Gaudet. Gaudet (20:00) stopped 4 of 6 shots the rest of the way.

Summerside leads the MHL with 80 points.
