The Digby Regional High School Lady Mariners senior basketball team downed the host St. Mary’s Bay Academy Lady Stingrays 65-35 in league play Thursday night.
SMBA held an 8-7 edge until the five minute mark of the first quarter when Digby opened up the game going on a 13-2 run. Sasha Dunphy and Brianne Riley scored seven and six points respectively to help pace the visitors.
Kristine McNeill came off the bench to score eight points in the second quarter as Digby extended their lead 38-20 at the half.
Allison Stone netted 10 points to keep the Stingrays in the game and dropped in six more to win the third quarter 11-10.
SMBA could not maintain their momentum in the final frame and Digby took advantage of a tiring Stingray squad to pull away 19-4 for the win.
Four Mariner players posted double-digits with Dunphy scoring 19, Kristine McNeill and Breanne Lewis netting 12 each and Brianna Riley adding 11.
Allison Stone finished with 16 points and Micaella Sabine chipped in eight for the Stingrays.
Winter weather has played havoc with basketball schedules this season and Darlene Johns said her Stingray squad has lost several games and two tournaments, one being this weekend, due to cancellations.
Although the Lady Mariners are in a similar situation as the Stingrays they managed to beat out Mother Nature completing two of their three league games this week.
On Tuesday, Feb. 5 the Lady Mariners travelled to Annapolis where they were defeated 53-42. AWEC led 10-8 in the first quarter and Digby fell further behind 29-19 at the half.
Kendra Lewis led the Lady Mariners with 19 points, Sasha Dunphy had seven and Kailyn MacDonald and Breanne Lewis chipped in six points each.
The Lady Mariners were to travel to Windsor to play Kings Edgehill on Friday night and the Lady Stingrays were slated to compete in the North Queens tournament on Feb. 8 and 9 but the impending blizzard forced these events to be cancelled.
