About 20 gallons of diesel has spilled into the waters at the Annapolis Royal causeway after a fishing boat sank during overnight February 4.
Luke Gaulton, communications officer for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, said Monday morning that an environmental response officer from the Coast Guard was on the scene.
“It could have been much worse,” Gaulton said. “We had a report there was about 20 gallons of diesel on board and that seems consistent with what the officer on the scene is reporting.”
At 2 p.m. on February 3 the Coast Guard received a report that a fishing vessel was taking on water on the bay side of the causeway. By late Monday morning, all that was visible on the water was a light sheen.
Gaulton said that the spill was too light to apply an absorbent effectively and that the fuel should quickly dissipate on its own. The environmental response officer was to remain on the scene while the owner of the vessel arranged to have it raised.
