A Yarmouth County resident has been named truck driver of the year by the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association.
Steve MacPhee is the owner-operator of TST Trucking Ltd., based in Hebron, which has contracts with a number of companies and is part of the Day and Ross Transportation Group.
In the past he’s been recognized for having achieved one million accident-free miles – and is working towards achieving that milestone again – and he has also placed high at regional and national trucking competitions.
The award he recently received is based on nominations that can be received from industry peers and management.
“He was driver of the year and he’s been recognized for that in the four jurisdictions, Newfoundland, P.E.I, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. It’s the highest recognition award that you could receive as a driver,” said Joe Sullivan, director of safety risk management at Day and Ross’s headquarters in Hartland, New Brunswick. “He’s worthy of the award because he represents us very well.”
Aside from working with his family (including his wife Tam) in the business, MacPhee is carrying on a family tradition in truck driving and freight delivery.
“My whole family has done it all my life,” he said. “I’m like the fourth generation, following people like my father and my grandfather.”
He says he was both surprised and honoured by the award.
The criteria for the award went beyond just a person’s truck driving record and professionalism. It also took into account their community involvement. On this front MacPhee was recognized for such things as being a minor hockey coach and conducting safety courses in the community.
“Steve is one of those individuals that what you see is what you get, and what you see is very good,” said Sullivan. “He’s a very pleasant and professional individual.”
