Ryan Smart Chandler has been drawing his own cartoons since he was a small child and now it’s his dream to get his cartoons on television.

Smart Chandler has a fine arts degree from NSCAD.  While there he took several courses in film and animation.  Smart Chandler says he has been serious about animation since 2007.

“I was designing some characters for class and I said ‘I think these are too good to submit to a school project,’” he says.

After that he started to design characters he thought would work for comics and animations.

Smart Chandler later created his company Flapjack Studios, which focuses on original animated series development including character designing, some script writing and creating the packages to pitch the show.

“The packages we send out are very enticing.  Everything is done, even a bit of the writing,” he says.

Flapjack Studios also includes Smart Chandler’s wife Stacy, as well as Max Lingley.  Stacy has done some of the character design and helps with feedback on the script.  Lingley collaborates on the script writing.

Smart Chandler says he has sent packages to companies to get feedback on his current project, Flipside University.  He says feedback was positive.

“The response was all pretty much the same.  It’s strong work.  You need to network,” he says.

Flipside University

Flipside University is Smart Chandler’s main project.  It is an animated comedy focused around six main characters with one as the main protagonist.  The show takes place in a university and also includes the company’s mascot, a Betta fish who happens to be a rapper.

Smart Chandler has been marketing Flipside University through his Facebook fan page and website.  Smart Chandler has created some comic versions of the show so that the audience can get a feel for the humour.  He is also working on getting some trailers ready for YouTube.

Another marketing and networking tool Smart Chandler has used is trade shows.  He recently attended Hal-Con - the Science Fiction convention in Halifax and Jalloo – An Atlantic Canadian festival of games and animation.  There, Smart Chandler sets up displays on Flipside University and markets his series.

Development for Flipside University is nearly complete and so far responses from the public have been good.

“General response was excitement,” says Smart Chandler.
