After last year’s Wharf Rat Run, organized in conjunction with the Wharf Rat Rally in Digby, the Yarmouth and Acadian Shores Tourism Association (YASTA) is looking to expand that success for the Aug. 28 – Sept. 1, 2013 Wharf Rat Rally.

General manager Julie Walters says the organization views the Wharf Rat Rally as something that can benefit all of Southwestern Nova Scotia.

“Digby is at just about the maximum capacity that it can handle and there is a need to expand this event to other areas. Yarmouth & Acadian Shores is a perfect fit,” she said.

In order to have a coordinated effort, YASTA is forming a committee to work at planning events for the region.

“We need an event or a series of events that will draw bikers from Digby for the day,” she said.

“There are many ideas floating around and it’s time to make some of them happen.”

Group sales coordinator Rick Allwright will lead the effort. He says the community will have to band together to create a “must attend” event for any biker.

YASTA is looking for volunteers, especially those interested in motorcycles, to join their committee. Email: wharfrat@yasta.ca or call: 902-742-8130 or 902-740-5251.

We passed up the opportunity to have our own rally and the best we can do is leech off other people's innovation. Maybe Digby will figure out how to attract industry next so we can get whatever scraps fall from their table.

Didn't Yarmouth have the chance to HOST the Warf Rat Rally at one time? I believe they did but town council in their infinite wisdom snubbed their noses at the idea. I guess the town was afraid of of bunch of guys in their 50's on motorcycles?? After Digby started reaping all the economic spinoff, now Yarmouth becomes an 'us too' town as usual. Keep voting down any kind of entrepreneurial spirit council.... bravo!

Seems to me that just a few years ago some one in Yarmouth tried to get a rally off the ground but was basically shut down by the Town and other authorities, I think having an event at the airport that no one uses was one of the issues they faced. Now they are all trying to on board.....what vision, how pathetic.
