Police were looking for the driver of a Volkswagen that smashed into a utility pole Friday evening at 361 Main Street at the east end of Lawrencetown just before 9 p.m. RCMP later confirmed that the Jetta was stolen from Beaconsfield.
A witness told The Spectator that the car hit the pole, a man about 30 years old got out and appeared to be uninjured. He asked for help moving the car off the road but then took off running west through Lawrencetown, saying he was going to find help. Almost an hour later he had not returned.
In the meantime, Lawrencetown firefighters had blocked off the road and an RCMP officer searched the car and talked to the witness. Two other RCMP members arrived later. By 9:30 p.m. a tow truck arrived and loaded the extensively damaged vehicle onto a flatbed.
The homeowner who lives at 361 Main Street thinks he was lucky. If the car, which he said was heading east and driving fast, hadn't hit the pole it would have smashed into his single-storey house where two neighbours were visiting. He said the driver told him he had hit water coming around a curve and lost control.
Several years ago, a few houses east of Friday night's crash, a car clipped off a fire hydrant and landed in a front yard. The driver in that case also fled the scene.
