When people gathered for the opening of Yarmouth's skateboard park on Friday, Dec 7, for some it was a dream finally realized.

The park is located on the corner of Main and Commercial streets just north of the south end playground.

Back in the late 1980s a group of young people organized behind an effort to build a facility on Forest Street. That was the beginning of the dream. Since then successive committees have raised money, lobbied councils and pursued the vision of a state-of-the-art recreation complex for skateboarders, inline skaters and cyclists.

At the opening ceremonies Mayor Pam Mood singled out Gerry Fitzgerald, chair of the Society On Making Overdue Renewal Efforts, for spearheading efforts over the last five years.

“This is a beautiful park. Kids, it’s your park … take care of it, enjoy it and I’m sure it is going to be here for many years for your kids to enjoy,” Fitzgerald told those watching from the sidelines.

“This dream that started five years ago on a piece of paper is a reality,” he said before he cut the ceremonial opening ribbon.

I think the skate park is a wonderful idea. We need more things for our youth to keep them healthy and active. My only complaint is that there are no helmets being worn and I think this park should be supervised.
