Everyone was full of cheer and high spirits for the 2012 Nova Scotia tree cutting ceremony.
Classes from primary to four from Lockeport Elementary and Hillcrest Academy were there waving their provincial flags and learning the history of the connection between Nova Scotia and Boston.
Each year since 1971, Nova Scotia has sent Boston a large Christmas tree in gratitude for the aide that Bostonians provided after the devastating Halifax Explosion on Dec. 6, 1917.
Halifax sent a telegram to Boston for help and Boston had responded by sending in trains full of doctors, nurses and help for Nova Scotians.
This year’s donors of the tree were Paul and Jan Hicks of Jordan Bay for the 70-year old tree that stood 40 to 50 feet tall.
The province is searching for the next perfect Nova Scotia red spruce or balsam fir for Boston.

The Shelburne County tree will be the centre attraction at the Boston Common on Nov. 29 at a ceremony that will attract close to 30,000 people and will be broadcast live on the local ABC television station.
