Yarmouth MLA Zach Churchill says that small business owners continue to be upset with the Dexter government’s decisions to pick winners and losers in the South Shore’s economy.
“We have a government that has needed to hand out cash and bail out businesses because of their decision to close the ferry,” says Churchill in a media release. “There are many businesses that are suffering and they are wondering why the Dexter government is ignoring their plight.”
Churchill says businesses in Yarmouth have closed because of the loss of the ferry and businesses throughout the South Shore still feel the impact of the closure.
“Local businesses take a hit when you cut an important international tie that brings money into the community,” says Churchill. “The Liberals have pointed out the error of the Dexter government’s decision and will continue to call for the return of the Yarmouth ferry.”
Bruce Rogers, owner of the Guest Lovitt House Bed and Breakfast, says that the Dexter government’s decision to cut the ferry will continue to hurt small businesses and that many small businesses are looking for relief from the government.
“This government is handing out free cash to paper mills, rail lines and other hotels,” says Rogers. “There are plenty of small businesses that need some relief because of the government’s decision to cut the ferry and we are wondering where we can sign up.”
Mike McClelland, owner of a now closed golf store in Yarmouth, echoed Rogers’s concerns.
“I fought to keep my business open, but there is only so much I can do,” says McClelland. “Having to close up shop and leave town was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make.”
Churchill echoes the previous Liberal commitment to restore the ferry.
“The Liberals have committed to seeing a ferry back in Yarmouth – it was the economic engine for the South Shore,” says Churchill. “We need our ferry restored and relief for businesses before it’s too late.”
