The balmy nature of this winter brought the unmistakably clear whistle of the white-throated song sparrow to my ears the first week of February.

This popular bird can be seen hopping about thickets, overgrown fields, parks, and woodsy suburbs. They readily come to backyards for birdseed.

A gardener’s connection to birds is natural and with winter pickings becoming slim, a recent email from Veseys describing some of their feeders was especially timely.

I was especially taken with the Peanut Wreath feeder. Firstly, I love the wreath form – it’s a shape that represents welcome and good cheer. But the design adds additional value.

The 12-inch circular, heavy duty, powder-coated wreath holds peanuts in the shell and can provide “hours of entertainment as you watch your fine feathered friends hang in every direction while they wrestle peanuts from inside the feeder.”

The feeder is a favorite of several species of jays, as well as woodpeckers, which love the challenge and taste that peanuts provide.

The feeder can also be used to hold suet balls in the colder months. A 500-gram package of Valencia (Canadian grown) peanuts in the shell is included with every order. Cost is $22.95

Another offering of Veseys is the Globe Feeder. This cleverly designed item allows small birds to dine in peace. The openings on this stylish feeder are just the right size for finches, nuthatches, chickadees and other small birds but are too small for jays and other feeder bullies. The latching top stays firmly in place, keeping larger squirrels out of the seed. It holds 1.5 lbs of oil sunflower seed and measures 11¾ inches in diameter.

Then there are the beautiful blue moon and harvest moon feeders. With no flowers in the garden, these glittering glass feeders can add colour to your winter landscape.

The one-stop feeder allows birds to perch on the rim to dine. When it’s wet and windy they can hop inside to eat. The extra thick crackle glass sparkles when it catches the light. Drainage holes keep seed dry. The feeders have a two-cup capacity. The colour may vary from one feeder to the next as they are individually crafted. Each 9-inch feeder comes with a 15” hanging cord.
