The Yarmouth Mariners widened the gap between first and second place in the MHL Bent Division on Saturday night with an 8-2 win over the Amherst Ramblers in Amherst.

The Mariners now sit in first place with 63 points. Amherst sits in second place with 60 points.  The two teams meet again in Yarmouth on Wednesday night. The Feb. 15 game had originally been slated for two weeks ago but had been postponed due to weather.

Mathieu Pompei led the Mariners with three goals in their Feb. 11 victory over Amherst, while Zack Henry added one goal and two assists and Colin Campbell tallied four assists.

Also scoring for the Mariners were Andrew Wigg, Morgan Mullen, Nicholas Zern and Nick Booth.

Yarmouth went one for four on the powerplay while Amherst also went one for four.

Charles Grant stopped 30 of 32 shots for the win while Richard Tingley (29:38) stopped nine of 14 shots in the loss before being replaced by Jesse Cox. Cox (30:22) stopped 13 of 16 shots the rest of the way.

Saturday night was the Mariners’ second win last week. Last Thursday the Mariners defeated Pictou 8-4.

This coming weekend the Mariners will play their last two home games of the regular season. On Friday, Feb. 17 the Mariners host Pictou and on Saturday, Feb. 18 they host Bridgewater.
