Middleton Regional High School’s 60th reunion is set to take place July 23, 24, and 25.
Howard Selig, a member of the reunion planning committee, said that about 30 people have already signed up and he expects many more will sign up at the last minute.
“Over 1,000 former students attended the last reunion,” he said. “They cleaned out not only the cash from the bank machines, but also most of the beer from the liquor store.”
He hopes that the same high enthusiasm will continue this year and that people will take the opportunity to come back to Middleton and catch up with classmates they probably haven’t seen in years.
He added that some people dread high school reunions, but most everyone who joins in has a great time. People change as they get older and while it’s great to see old friends again, it’s sometimes more interesting to talk to classmates you never really knew back in the day.
“People always have a great time once they get here,” he said. “We’re also hoping to encourage local businesses to stay open a little longer to give people a chance to talk.”
Al Peppard and other members of the committee are busy helping to revive the old-school memories. But the committee is also bringing the reunion to the worldwide web, with a new website that not only lists scheduled events and contact information, but provides a list of places to stay and things to do so families can plan a vacation time around the reunion weekend.
A number of events have already been listed on the site including a Friday night kitchen party, followed by a family day on Saturday and an adult social that evening. More children’s activities are planned on Sunday, followed by a church service and a late morning pancake brunch.
“Friday evening we decided not to have a live band this year,” he said. “We thought it would be enjoyable just to sit around and be able to talk and not feel we need to shout over the music.”
Saturday is also a photo day with DJ entertainment scheduled for the adult social in the evening. A band concert will take place Sunday afternoon at the Rotary Park, and Selig added that he hopes former band members will join the latest members in a special concert.
Also new this year, the committee is asking alumni to contribute to the annual bursary fund offered each year to two graduating students. Selig said the recent economic downturn has had a detrimental effect on the fund and the committee is asking people to help plump up the coffers.
