Funeral service for the late Margaret Mary Bowie, 91, formerly of Heatherton, Antigonish County, was held May 24 in Immaculate Conception Church, Heatherton, with Father Andrew Gillies officiating, assisted by Deacon Art Riley. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Mrs. Bowie died May 20, 2018, in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. Readers at the funeral Mass were Jenny Bowie, Peter Ludlow and Krystal Bowie. John Sullivan, Ellen Gabriel Bell and Siobhann Lowney MacDougall presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by Heatherton Choir, violinist Anna Ludlow and family members. Members of Immaculate Conception CWL formed an honour guard. Pallbearers were Harold Bowie, George Bowie, John Bowie, Eddie Bowie, Wilfred Bowie and Richard Bowie. Born in Croft (Campbelltown), Antigonish County, she was the daughter of the late Agnes (Campbell) and John ‘The Barber’ MacPherson. She attended both Mount St. Bernard College and Normal College, Truro, and had a long career teaching in the Antigonish school district. Later in life, she received her X ring, which was a great symbol of accomplishment. A parishioner of Immaculate Conception Parish, Heatherton, she was a long-time member of the CWL, a passionate genealogist, careful reader and life-long learner. She was also outspoken on issues that were important to her. She married Wilfred Bowie in June of 1947, and they celebrated 65 years together, until his passing in 2013. She is survived by seven sons, Harold, South River; John (Debbie), Antigonish; Kenny, South Side Harbour; Wilfred (Sonya), Afton; George, Calgary, Alberta; Edward, Dunmore; Richard, Bayfield; three daughters, Dorothy (Basil Ludlow), Pleasant Valley; Linda (John Gabriel), Fitchburg Massachusetts; Carol, Charlottetown; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; sister, Teresa ‘Terry’ Heslop, Charlotte, North Carolina; brother, Rod (Pat), Thunder Bay, Ontario; sister-in-law, Pat MacPherson, St. Andrews. She was predeceased by daughter, Donna; two brothers, John, Angus; step-father, James Bray. Memorial donations may be made to the Antigonish Food Bank or St. Mary’s Cemetery, Heatherton.
