With sadness, we announce dad’s passing Monday, February 26, 2018, at the Heart of the Valley Long Term Care Home, Middleton, NS. After a full wonderful life he now rests peacefully. Born March 21, 1928, Sydney, NS, he was the son of the late Dennis and Theodora Bartkow (nee: Barnatsky) he was born and raised in Whitney Pier, NS. A military veteran in the RCAF, he took pride in his career spanning nearly 30 years of service. He continued supporting military morale being instrumental in the design and development of the Greenwood Golf Course, where he remained Greens Superintendent until his retirement. Distinguished as the founding member and President of the RCAF Association 107 Valley Wing, Greenwood, NS, and a proud member and supporter of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 98, Kingston, NS, Joe’s commitment to community and the RCAF will not be forgotten. Joe’s love of sports included curling, baseball, hockey, diving and boxing; however, his greatest passion was golf. Joe is survived by his wife, the love of his life for more than 69 years, Rita Bartkow (nee: Lavoie), Middleton; sons, James (Glenda) Bartkow Halifax, NS, Brian Bartkow, Kentville, NS, Stephen Bartkow, Toronto, ON; daughters, Theresa (Ron) Brownrigg, Ottawa, ON and Susan (Greg) White, Chugiak, AK.; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; sister, Kaye (Kasha) MacDonald, Sydney, NS. He was predeceased by his daughter, Dauna; sisters, Anne and Mary; brothers, Michael and Stephen. By dad’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Heart of the Valley for their endless and compassionate care given to Joe and his family. Donations in dad’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home 398 Main St. 902-825-3448.
