Elizabeth Mckinnon — Glace Bay

In Celebration of a life well lived, we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved mother, Elizabeth on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at the Glace Bay General Hospital at the age of 90. Elizabeth was born in Glace Bay and was the daughter of the Late Stephen and Charlotte (Horton) McInnis. She graduated from Provincial Normal College and began her teaching career at Mackay’s Corner School. It was here she met her future husband, Michael. Both were passionate educators and shared a teaching career of 57 years. Michael spent the bulk of his career as a high school principal. Elizabeth focused on substitute teaching and correcting her children’s grammar on a daily basis. Mom also enjoyed a good game of Bridge and was also a member of St. Anne’s C.W.L. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and grand dogs. Elizabeth is survived by daughters, Lillian of Glace Bay, Kathleen, Elizabeth (Dario); son, Paul (Lori) of Halifax; two grandchildren, McKenzie and Logan; sisters, Sally (Bill) Hodgson and Deanna (Richard) Balon. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Michael; her son, Michael Jr.; sisters, Esther, Margaret, Shirley; and brothers, Robert, Stephen and Gerald. Mom was a strong person until the end. She enjoyed life and made the most of every moment. A special thank you to all the care workers who made her life so joyful, especially Cleo Eagan and Marlene MacEachern. Funeral Services are under the care and direction of JM Curry’s Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 5, 2018. 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at JM Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Celebration of Life will be Friday, April 6th 10 a.m. at St Anne’s Church. Interment to Follow at Church Cemetery. Donation to Honor Elizabeth can be made to Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Fund.
