QUEENS COUNTY – The Region of Queens Municipality is eliminating one of its council meetings each month.

During the regular council meeting May 22, the council received a recommendation to remove the committee of the whole meetings from the schedule, effective immediately.

Instead, there will continue to be two council meetings each month.

Details in the region’s staff report say, “council meetings are becoming more efficient and there seems to be less need for three meetings a month including committee of the whole.”

The details also explain committee of the whole meetings have been cancelled for the past three months, and there hasn’t been a negative impact on the length of council meetings.

Job description revision

There was a recommendation that council approves the revised job description for director of planning and development.

Single axle chassis

There was a recommendation that council approves the purchase of a 2019 HV607 SBA International Chassis from Silver’s Garage (2008) Ltd. for $104,998.63 plus tax.

“The vehicle purchase is a budgeted item, within allocation and will be funded through the Region’s equipment reserve,” says the staff report.

Tournaments and special events

There was a recommendation that council gives budget approval for a Tournament/Special Events Assistance grant of $200 to the Queens Minor Hockey Association. This will help with the costs of hosting the first annual Privateer Concrete Classic.

There was a further recommendation that it be funded from the Community Grants and Programs budget line of the Recreation and Healthy Communities Department.

The Queens County Minor Hockey Association is scheduled to host the first annual Privateer Concrete Hockey Classic June 23 in the parking lot adjacent to Queens Place Emera Centre. The event will be a three-on-three ball hockey tournament. There will be three divisions with between four and seven players on each team. The staff report says teams will be from Atom, Peewee and Bantam levels (ages nine to 14).

Food and beverage operations

There was a recommendation that council requests staff to negotiate a two-year renewable agreement with Lane’s Privateer Inn for food and beverage operations at Queens Place Emera Centre.

There was a further recommendation that council permits “the chief administrative officer to enter into agreement according to most appropriate terms and conditions subject to Lane’s Privateer Inn’s submitted proposal effective June 1, 2018, or as soon thereafter as possible.”

Development agreement request

There was a recommendation that council gives notice of its intention to enter into a development agreement with Devan Smith for an automobile service station on property identified as PID# 70157052 at 10446 Highway 8 in Harmony.

There was another recommendation that a public hearing be scheduled for June 25 at 6 p.m. in Caledonia.

Considerations in the staff report say the lot is 23,000 square feet with 100 feet of frontage on Highway 8. The lot is vacant land, and the owner plans to construct a new building.
