WHITE POINT BEACH - Wanted: 90 families to hop into the Atlantic Ocean on Jan. 1 to kick off the 90th anniversary Celebrations for White Point Beach Resort.
White Point’s annual polar bear dip is back – dubbed the polar bunny dip in honour of the bunnies that the resort is so well known for - and this year, organizers are hoping 90 families, or over 200 people, will be brave enough to participate.
Now in its third year, the Polar Bunny Dip is similar to the annual New Year’s polar bear dips held throughout Canada, where brave souls kick off the new year with a plunge in icy waters.
According to Donna Hatt, White Point’s marketing manager, the event kicks of at 3:30 p.m., with registration and a bonfire on the beach. From there, they will create a 'human' 90 formation on the front lawn, visible from the OceanCam on Nova Scotia Webcams site, and make copies to share with everyone. The actual dip will begin at 4 p.m. with the 90 families, before everyone hops out and heads to the indoor pool to warm up and enjoy hot chocolate.
“We’re hoping to beat our record of 170 people last year,” says Hatt.
The first 90 people to participate and donate a minimum of $5 to go towards Bird Studies Canada to protect the piping plovers will receive a commemorative t-shirt.
Participants are asked to bring clothes they can wear into the ocean, which can be a bathing suit, shorts and t-shirt, or anything they like. Also needed are a housecoat or blanket to wrap up in to stay warm, a beach towel and flip flops or water shoes.
“But, be sure to grab a bathing cap as colourful and fun as you can,” says Hatt.
Most of all, people will need a sense of fun and love for Canada, she says.
White Point Beach Resort will be hosting events all year to celebrate its 90th year. According to Hatt, the resort opened in 1928, thanks to the vision and passion of Philip Hooper Moore of Boston.
“We are proud to carry on the tradition of welcoming folks to our shores - and with an incredible line up of festivities, we're an energetic 90-year-old.”
