An Edmonton man who fatally stabbed a Cape Breton man has been convicted of manslaughter.

Cody Kyle Jensen, 23, was convicted Thursday of the crime and will now be sentenced Aug. 21.

According to a report in the Edmonton Journal, the two men stayed in hotel rooms with an adjoining door. Jensen and his girlfriend were celebrating his birthday and her completion of exams. Beaton, of Mabou, was in Jasper on a ski trip with two friends. Neither man knew each other.

Jensen was awoken by noise from Beaton's adjoining room just before 4 a.m. There was an altercation between the two men and Beaton suffered a single, fatal stab wound to his abdomen that severed his aorta.

Court of Queen's Justice June Ross concluded Jensen had no intent to kill Beaton, but rejected his claim that the killing was self-defence because she believed he used excessive force.

Jensen continues his release on conditions pending sentence.
