And there were the two dogs that appeared to be sprayed with an unknown substance.
Those were among the 123 calls Annapolis RCMP handled between Sept. 4 and Sept. 11. They also investigated break-and-enters, stopped speeders, and charged a man for impaired driving.
Following are highlights of their week:
-- September 5 at 10:39 a.m. at Middleton. Police received a complaint of the theft of a license plate from a trailer. The complainant didn’t realize it had been stolen until he arrived home in Yarmouth. The plate has been added to Canadian Police Information Centre database as lost/stolen.
-- September 5 at 1:07 p.m. at New Albany. Police charged a 52-year-old man with speeding on Highway 10. If found guilty he will pay a fine of $237.50. Police warned and/or charged 14 others with speeding violations during the week.
-- September 5 at 4:46 p.m. at Middleton. Police were called to the NSLC after the store reported shoplifting. Staff reported theft of a bottle of rum. Police went to the store and obtained the identification of a suspect who they are attempting to locate.
-- September 5 at 7:07 p.m. at Torbrook Mines. A 56-year-old man was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and will appear in court at a later date. The person was lodged in cells until sober and the vehicle was towed.
-- September 5 at 8:16 p.m. at Torbrook Mines. Police conducted a checkstop on Torbrook Road. Only six vehicles were checked. The checkpoint was ended due to interception of an impaired driver. Two additional checkstops were conducted in the county during the week.
-- September 5 at 12:53 p.m. at Brickton. Police responded to a 911 single-vehicle crash on Highway 1. Police, fire, DOT, and EHS attended. An elderly man was taken to hospital with unknown injuries after his vehicle left the road and hit a tree. The vehicle sustained significant damage. Airbags deployed. The vehicle had to be towed.
-- September 6 at 1:43 a.m. at Upper Granville. An eastbound vehicle on Highway 1 struck a deer. There were no injuries to the single occupant. The vehicle was damaged and left on the highway over night. The 76-year-old driver did call DNR to inform them. Later it was determined that her car had been rummaged through over night.
-- September 6 at 5:33 a.m. at Clementsport. Police responded to a 911 single-vehicle crash. A westbound vehicle on the Clementsport Road went off the road into the south-side ditch, and struck a power pole, shearing it off. EHS and fire attended and two people were transported to hospital and later released. The driver was a 93-year-old man.
-- September 6 at 8:16 a.m. at Middleton. Police have charged a 77-year-old man with backing into another vehicle – backing when unsafe to do so. If found guilty will pay a fine of $180.
-- September 6 at 11:46 a.m. at Middleton. Police received a complaint of threats. As a result of the investigation police charged a 67-year-old man with uttering threats and assault with a weapon. The man will attend court at a later date.
-- September 7 at 9:03 a.m. at Hillsburn. Police received a report of a break-and-enter into a residence in Hillsburn. Police went to the scene and the complainant advised the window in the front door was smashed, that the interior of the home had been trashed, and an Xbox was stolen. Photos and statements were taken and other investigative measures are under way.
-- September 7 at 1:32 p.m. at Middleton. Police received a call for assistance from a property owner who advised that while cleaning out one of their apartments they located drugs and needles that they believe belonged to the previous tenant. Police went to the scene and took the items. The previous tenant will be contacted.
-- September 8 at 1:16 p.m. at Wilmot. Police received a complaint of a break-and-enter. The caller reported her parent’s home, which is vacant, had been broken into sometime in the last four days. Police attended and learned that nothing had been taken. Police obtained a statement and have opened an investigation.
-- September 8 at 1:33 p.m. at Springfield. Police received a complaint of a break-and-enter into a cottage which occurred sometime in the previous five days. A neighbor had checked on the property and found the door open. Police went to the scene and seized two items for fingerprints. Nothing appeared to be missing or damaged. The investigation continues.
-- September 8 at 4:32 p.m. at Middleton. Police received a complaint of a theft of a hunting camera from the complainant’s property. The camera is valued at $160. Police conducted neighbourhood inquiries.
-- September 8 at 10:52 p.m. at Nictaux. Police received a complaint of apparent animal cruelty where it appears two dogs had been sprayed by an unknown substance. With the help of social media the owners of the dogs arrived to retrieve their dogs and police learned that there was an ongoing issue with the dogs being loose and entering a farmer’s property where chickens were kept. This incident is under investigation.
-- September 9 at 3:15 a.m. at Lawrencetown. Police stopped a motor vehicle on Highway 101 and the driver, a 42-year-old man, was charged for driving without a valid driver’s license, operating without registration, and having no insurance. If found guilty the driver could pay a total of $1,862.50 in fines.
-- September 9 at 3:12 p.m. at North Williamston. Police received a complaint of a theft of a truck on Middle Road. The caller reported that the vehicle was stolen sometime between 7:30 and 8 a.m. and that their home was also entered. In addition to the vehicle, a television and food from a freezer were taken. The incident is under investigation.
-- September 9 at 6:20 p.m. at Young’s Cove. Police received a report of break-and-enter and property damage that occurred sometime overnight. Police went to the scene which was the old Gospel Church Camp that had been recently purchased and under renovations. Nothing appears to have been stolen, but entry had been gained and there was damage inside one of the buildings.
-- September 10 at 10:20 p.m. at Bridgetown. Police were called to a report of a dog that was injured. Police went to the scene and located the dog who appeared to be injured and may have been struck by a vehicle. At that same time the dog’s owner also showed up and police learned the dog was elderly and only appeared injured.
