Intermittent custody
John Douglas Crowell, 33, of Hortonville, has been sentenced to intermittent custody and probation for committing an assault; uttering a death threat, stealing property from Walmart, failing to attend court as required and failing to attend at the New Minas RCMP detachment in accordance with a promise to appear for the purpose of the Identification of Criminals Act.
Crowell pleaded guilty to the charges on Oct. 10. Judge Alan Tufts sentenced Crowell to a total of 90 days of intermittent custody on the five charges, to be served from Fridays at 9 p.m. to Mondays at 5:30 a.m. beginning Oct. 13 until the sentence is served. Crowell was also sentenced to two years of probation. The court granted a secondary DNA order in relation to the assault charge.
Crowell committed the offences in New Minas on May 31 and Sept. 29, in South Alton on May 2 and in Kentville on Aug. 15.
Stole debit card, cell phone
Michael Borden, 40, of Dartmouth, has been handed a suspended sentence with probation for stealing a debit card and stealing a cell phone.
Borden changed his pleas to guilty on Oct. 10. Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek handed Borden a suspended sentence with 12 months of probation and fined him a total of $400 in victim surcharges on the two counts.
Borden committed the offences in Mount Uniacke on Oct. 10, 2016. Several other charges, including fraud, possession of a stolen debit card, being an accessory to an offence after the fact, breaking, enter and theft, stealing a truck and stealing a utility trailer were dismissed.
Breathalyser offences
Alexander Davidson, 28, of Canning, has been fined for operating a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.
Davidson pleaded guilty to the charge on Oct. 10. Judge Alan Tufts fined him a total of $1,300 and imposed a one-year driving prohibition against him.
Davidson committed the offence in Greenwich on Aug. 12. The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Davidson gave breathalyser readings of 120 and 120.
Stuart Donald MacLean, 56, of Hampton, Annapolis County, has been fined for operating a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.
MacLean pleaded guilty to the charge on Oct. 10. Judge Alan Tufts fined him a total of $1,560 and imposed a one-year driving prohibition against him.
MacLean committed the offence in White Rock on June 15. The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. MacLean gave breathalyser readings of 150 and 150.
Yvonne Michelle Ross, 41, of New Minas, has been fined for operating a motor vehicle while her blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.
Ross pleaded guilty to the charge on Oct. 10. Judge Alan Tufts fined her a total of $1,300 and imposed a one-year driving prohibition against her.
Ross committed the offence in North Kentville on Aug. 6. The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Ross gave breathalyser readings of 130 and 140.
Suspended sentence for assault
Sherri Lee Spinney, 48, of Wolfville, has been handed a suspended sentence with probation for committing an assault.
Spinney changed her plea to guilty on July 4. The matter was adjourned to Oct. 11 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.
Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek handed Spinney a suspended sentence with 12 months of probation.
Spinney committed the offence in Black River on March 29.
Stole property, failed to attend court
Sheena Felliccia Supple, 30, of Kentville, has been handed a suspended sentence with probation for three counts of stealing property valued at less than $5,000 from stores – Lawton’s Drugs in Kentville, the Superstore in New Minas and Dollarama in Greenwood - and failing to attend court as directed.
Supple pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing property and the charge of failing to attend court in February. The matters were adjourned to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing. Supple pleaded guilty to the third count of stealing property prior to her sentencing on Oct. 10.
Judge Alan Tufts handed Supple a suspended sentence with 12 months of probation on the four charges. Supple was ordered to pay $89.80 in restitution to Lawton’s Drugs as part of her restitution.
Supple committed the offences in Greenwood on Feb. 21, 2015, in Kentville on July 20, 2015; and Aug. 24, 2016, and in New Minas on Nov. 9, 2016.
Fines, probation for recognizance offences
Leah Marie Hawley, 36, of Port Williams, has been fined and sentenced to probation for three counts of failing to comply with her recognizance.
Hawley pleaded guilty to the charges on Oct. 10. Judge Alan Tufts fined her a total of $117 and sentenced her to 12 months of probation.
Hawley committed the offences in Kentville on June 26 and in Port Williams on Sept. 2 and 7. Two more counts of failing to comply with her recognizance were withdrawn on Oct. 10.
