The call came in at 12:10 a.m., said Kingston District Fire Chief Watson Armstrong.

“When I arrived on the scene, the flames were coming out the roof at the back of the home,” he said.

Six fire departments from Berwick to Lawrencetown responded to the blaze. Armstrong estimated as many as 50 firefighters were on scene to fight the fire.

The RCMP and paramedics also attended as per protocol, said the chief, noting one firefighter was overcome with heat exhaustion and had to be treated.

The occupants, who were home at the time, were awoken by a smoke detector, said Armstrong and were able to escape to safety uninjured with their dog and cat.

Firefighters were on the scene until about 5 a.m., said Armstrong. The fire has been ruled accidental but the exact cause has yet to be determined. The property was insured.

Assisting the Kingston department were the Berwick and District Volunteer Fire Department, the Aylesford District Volunteer Fire Department, the Nictaux and District Volunteer Fire Department and the Lawrencetown and District Volunteer Fire Department.
