NORTH KENTVILLE - A two-storey home is badly damaged following a structure fire that went undetected until flames and smoke could be seen from outside of the residence.
The fire broke out while the two adult occupants of the Lanzy Road home were away and had their pets with them, said Kentville fire chief Ryan MacEachern.
“With no one home it went unnoticed, so they already had heavy smoke and fire within the residence. The firefighters were able to make entry, but conditions were worsening (within) the structure.”
The blaze was reported shortly before 1:30 a.m. April 4. The fire originated between the first and second floors of the house, MacEachern said
“Any of the ones that get into the walls and attic spaces are always challenging because you’re fighting to get at them,” he said.
“It gets tough for firefighters, especially as the conditions worsen and they’re forced back out of the residence because of collapse and things like that.”
Departments from New Minas, Port Williams, Canning and Greenwich offered mutual aid to the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department.
An investigation into the cause was ongoing as of mid-afternoon April 4.
