RAWDON, N.S. – A cottage along Highway 14 in Rawdon Gold Mines has been destroyed by fire, but luckily nobody was inside at the time.
Rawdon Fire Department Chief Lee Roulston said the structure was totally destroyed by fire late in the evening on Nov. 25, 2017, around 10:20 p.m.
Nobody was injured during the blaze, he said.
“We were probably there for about four to five hours all told,” Roulston said, adding that there’s no official word on the cause of the fire at this point.
He said several departments from across Hants County responded to the scene.
“When we arrived, the fire was coming out through the windows and the roof,” he said. “It had started to spread into the grass a little bit, but once we arrived, that wasn’t a concern.”
Roulston said one of the challenges of this particular scene was the long driveway, which stretched approximately a kilometre, meaning they had to coordinate the tanker trucks to accommodate that.
Roulston also said he’s been in touch with the owners and said they had insurance on the property, which wasn’t their primary residence.
As the winter months approach, Roulston said property owners should make sure their chimneys are cleaned and keep their Christmas trees watered.
