North Kentville man nets conditional discharge for mischief, arson charge withdrawn

KENTVILLE, NS - A North Kentville man has been sentenced for committing mischief by wilfully burning a motor vehicle while charges of arson and possessing gasoline for the purpose of committing arson have been withdrawn.

Merlin Randolf McInnis, 64, pleaded guilty to the mischief charge in October 2016. The matter was adjourned to April 13 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.

Judge Jean Whalen handed McInnis a conditional discharge with 12 months of probation, including restitution of $1,806.02 payable through the court to the victim. McInnis was also fined $200 in victim surcharges.

McInnis committed the offence in North Kentville on June 18, 2016. Charges of intentionally causing damage by fire to a motor vehicle and possessing an incendiary material – gasoline – for the purpose of committing the offence of arson were withdrawn.
