Phone system moving to 10-digit dialing

Published on August 17, 2014

There are several dates to keep in mind as Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island move to 10-digit telephone dialing for local calls.

Right now local calls that are made using either seven or 10 digits will be connected without interruption, but this will change later this fall.

In the meantime, starting Aug. 23, local calls made by using just seven digits will be interrupted by a network announcement before being connected.

Effective Nov 16, calls made without using the area code will not be completed.

Two weeks after that, on Nov. 30, a new area code, 782, will begin to be introduced and will co-exist with the 902 area code in Nova Scotia and P.E.I. The new area code will be assigned to new telephone numbers.
