YARMOUTH, N.S. – A $1 million roadwork project has been announced by the province for Yarmouth County that includes replacement of the causeway bridge leading to Cape Forchu along with maintenance of the seawall and armour stone that’s there at the Yarmouth Bar.
“The bridge has degraded and the seawall has degraded. The armour stone has actually sunk down a bit,” says Yarmouth MLA Zach Churchill. “One serious storm could do a lot of serious damage to that and of course the economic impact for one of our main fishing fleets coming out of there would be substantial.”
He says the work will get underway this year.
“Obviously the Bar project is really key, economically, for a couple of reasons,” says Churchill. “To protect our tourism route to the Cape and to our beautiful lighthouse and to make sure we protect our harbour and the fleet that comes out of there.”
Churchill made the announcement on June 7 at the Pembroke Community Hall during their weekly Thursday night kitchen parties. There was good news announced for the hall as well, which will receive $35,000 to help with renovations and expansion of the facility.
Another project that was announced was the full repaving of the Wyman Road, which Churchill said will receive the full meal deal: repaving, ditching, culverts and repairs to guard rails.
Churchill also says that the paved section of the Canaan Road will be completed this year and the gravel part of the road is going to be rebuilt under the province’s gravel capital reconstruction program. The gravel section of Leighton Street in Hebron is going to be rebuilt under that program as well.
