Not many people can say they have gone surfing in Nova Scotia in the winter, but thanks to a new program being offered by White Point Beach Resort, it’s one item than can be crossed off the bucket list.
“Winter surfing is an experience," says staff from the East Coast Surf School who will be offering the winter surfing lessons. “The water is freezing, it's challenging, it tests you a little bit and then you’re stronger at the end of it and it's something unique that not many people can say they've done.”
White Point Beach Resort is offering a series of two-hour winter surfing lessons based on tides in anticipation of the best surf conditions. Beginner lessons include a winter wetsuit (sizes starting from 105 pounds), surf board, dry-land orientation on the indoor pool deck, a two-hour beginner surf lesson with East Coast Surf School and a post-surf warm up in the pool at White Point. Participants just need to bring a swimsuit.
Surf school staff say it would definitely help if participants had already taken a surfing lesson, but it is not completely necessary. Anyone who is a good swimmer will be fine, as participants generally stay in waist-to-chest deep water, especially if the surf is a little bit bigger. While it is suggested these lessons are suitable for those 16 years and older who can swim, youth 12 years and older, weighing 105 lbs and up, are welcome.
“White Point is a great venue for learning to surf because of its east-southeast facing direction,” says East Coast Surf School staff.
Nova-Scotian born, internationally-famous surfer Logan Landry agrees, saying these winter surf lessons will be a great opportunity.
“With the advancements in wetsuit technology, the accessibility of White Point, and with East Coast Surf School running the program, being the best and most reputable surf school, it should be an amazing experience,” says Landry.
To register for winter surf lessons, phone 1-800-565-5068 ext 1 at least seven days prior to your preferred date. Prices are available for both White Point Beach Resort guests and day guests.
