KENTVILLE, NS - A Grand Pre man who was among the candidates in the County of Kings mayoral race in the 2016 municipal election has been found guilty of unlawful confinement.
Laurie Kendal Junior Porter, 60, pleaded not guilty to the charge in March and stood trial on Oct. 18.
Porter, who was self-represented, made an application to the court regarding the possible violation of his rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The court found there was no breach pursuant to Section 8 of the charter, which provides everyone in Canada with protection against unreasonable search and seizure.
Judge Claudine MacDonald found Porter guilty of the charge. He was handed a conditional discharge with six months of probation. Porter must keep the peace and be of good behaviour.
According to a news release issued by the RCMP in November 2016, police received a complaint against Porter on Sept. 25, 2016, and arrested him later that day.
When police arrived at a residence on Highway 1 in Grand Pre and entered the home, they located a 64-year-old man in a room that had been secured from the outside.
The man was removed from the home, left in the care of a family member and taken to the Valley Regional Hospital for medical treatment.
