Liverpool Salvation Army hopes to raise funds to help people in need

LIVERPOOL - The Salvation Army in Liverpool is scheduled to have its annual Christmas Kettle Campaign run from Nov. 17 to Dec. 23.
“The Salvation Army has been raising funds in communities where we are to assist needy folks,” said Dennis Maybury, a corps officer and pastor in Liverpool.
During the campaign, the Salvation Army gets the community involved, and people donate money. When this year’s campaign kicks off, people will be able to find kettles at Sobeys, the Superstore and the NSLC, said Dennis.
Kettles are also set up in Caledonia and Shelburne because it’s part of the Salvation Army’s coverage area as well.
“The community has been very good to us, I understand, over the past many years, and we always like to thank the community,” said Dennis. “And also we’d like to thank our kettle volunteers.”
Another thing the Salvation Army does at Christmas is to provide hampers.
“Enough to feed a family at Christmas time,” said Dennis.
Additionally, a number of businesses will have Christmas trees set up, and on each tree will be a tag with a child’s age and wish list – a toy that child wants for Christmas.
Dennis and Mary Maybury arrived in July, and this is their sixth year with the Salvation Army. Prior to Liverpool, the Mayburys were in Cape Breton and, before that, Ontario. Their role involves overseeing the Salvation Army’s ministry in Liverpool.
The Salvation Army is inviting people to the Berry Merry Christmas Concert, set to happen at the Astor Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 14. Tickets are on sale now.
