Demolition of Zion Baptist Church underway

The completion of the demolition of Zion Baptist Church on Parade Street is underway.

Removal of valuable components of the structure, including the stained glass windows, has taken place over the past six months. Demolition of the structure itself is now underway. The bell tower was scheduled to be dismantled today (Tuesday).

Last year trustees made the decision to demolish the church when they learned the building was in dire need of approximately $1 million repairs. Upkeep costs for the structure, which has crumbling brickwork, are additional. The congregation has dramatically diminished over the years.

The church, an icon in Yarmouth’s landscape, was built in 1895 for $23,330.
