Outdoor yoga event to mark first day of spring March 20

WHITE POINT – It’s time to get outside, try something new, bid winter farewell and welcome spring.

Darlene Norman, the recreation and special events coordinator at the White Point Beach Resort, knows just how to do that, and is inviting everyone to join her this March 20 at 1:15 p.m. for Spring Equinox Cold Yoga on the lawn.

Norman is always keeping an eye on trends and unique experiences that they think guests may like, and says cold yoga is becoming big in really cold cities like Winnipeg. After seeing some news stories about cold yoga and having great yoga instructors to partner with, White Point Beach Resort staff thought sun salutations on the edge of the sea and a yoga class taking place at the exact time winter ends and spring begins would be a great way to honour the spring equinox.

“We'd been hosting weekly yoga sessions on the front lawn overlooking the ocean here at White Point for the past couple summers, but hadn't tried it in the winter,” says Norman.

Now is their chance, she says.

Yoga is about calming the mind, toning the body and honouring yourself, says Norman.

“It seems appropriate and fitting to honour mother nature with a class that thanks her for what's been a great winter, while greeting spring with aspirations of renewed enthusiasm and excitement seemed like a perfect pairing,” she says.

Of course, a yoga class outside on the edge of the ocean as the surf symphony plays on is a perfect backdrop for this experience, adds Norman.

White Point has been known to mark the changing of seasons in creative ways. For example, for the last spring equinox, White Point hosted a sunrise ceremony on the edge of the beach. Although Norman says a snowstorm hampered attendance, it was still a great experience for those who attended.

When winter arrived on Dec. 21, 2017, they headed out for a first-time ever hike to the point of White Point and toasted in the arrival of winter and popped the cork on a bottle of Nova Scotia sparkling wine out on the very tip of White Point.

Instructor Elise Johnston Agar says this class will welcome everyone, all ages and beginners and experienced people. Yoga mats will also be supplied, unless folks have their own and want to bring them along.

This class is free and open to everyone, guest or community member.

Yogis are asked to email darlene@whitepoint.com to let White Point know to expect them.
