Almost show time for Liverpool theatre group

Youth group set to make debut with May 13 performance

LIVERPOOL – A new youth-based theatre troop will make its debut next month.

The Winds of Change Dramatic Society’s new youth group is A Breath of Fresh Air, made up entirely of youth aged 13-17. Winds of Change board members Kallie Koliotassis and Hannah McKinnon stared the Queens County-based group in 2017.

The focus isn’t just on acting, but also directing, stage managing, technical skills, and producing.

“From the choosing of scripts to final curtain, the entire creative process of putting on a show is shared by all company members,” said Koliotassis in a news release.

Since its formation last fall, the group has flourished and led to the creation of this upcoming production. On Mother’s Day, Winds of Change invites people to come to A Breath of Fresh Air’s first show – It’s Show Time!

The youth will bring four short plays to the stage, including two comedies and two dramas. One of the comedy pieces was written and directed by students, and Koliotassis wrote one of the dramas.

The show will include a Mother’s Day-themed play as well, so people are encouraged to take their mothers out for a day at the theatre.

The Winds of Change and Breath of Fresh Air received a Queens Community Health Board grant, which has not only allowed the youth group to mount these productions but also to take a trip to Halifax to see Mamma Mia. The Region of Queens Municipality recently gave a grant to the youth group as well.

It’s Show Time! is set to take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Astor Theatre May 13.
