Festival of Dance Annapolis Royal (FODAR) will feature performances by the locally-based Company of Angels, Mocean Dance of Halifax and JD Dance from Toronto. The four-day event, on stage at King’s Theatre is, in fact, a festival within a festival, running as part of ARTs Unleashed!, an arts, culture and living festival which runs from August 16 through 24 in Annapolis Royal.

FODAR had its beginnings at last year’s ARTs Unleashed! when Canadian choreographer Randy Glynn created a new work set on 12 area seniors, all of them untrained in dance.  “Dancing in the Third Act” sold out every performance and received major regional and national coverage.  This year, in addition to repeat performances at FODAR, the production will also open Montreal’s Quartiers Danse Festival in September and the Atlantic Dance FESTIVAL de danse en Atlantique in Moncton NB in October. Glynn was also invited to present the work across the Atlantic in London at the Sadler’s Wells Elixir Festival. Unfortunately other commitments intervened.

An award-winning choreographer, Glynn serves as Artistic Director of the Festival and believes that good contemporary dance can offer engaging and entertaining experiences for general audiences. He has observed that “Last year’s success of 'Dancing in the Third Act' proved there is a large appetite in this region for high quality contemporary dance. FODAR aims to build on that success by programming strong but accessible works that any theatre, music or dance-lover would find entertaining and intriguing.”

Glynn’s newest work “Teen Angel” will open the festival on Thursday, Aug. 21.  Also on the program that evening will be Mocean Dance’s “Canvas 5 X 5”.  Friday evening will feature “Dancing in the Third Act, and JD Dance performing “Army of Barbie” and “A Mark”. Thursday and Friday’s performances repeat on Saturday and Sunday.

FODAR launches its website today at The site features background information on the festival, the artists and their productions as well as links to video.  Tickets are on sale now at King’s Theatre Box Office, 209 St. George St., by phone at 902-532-7704, or online at
