The New Booker School in Wolfville has announced plans to move to a Port Williams location in time for the start of the September school year.

The independent school has been leasing its current location on Seaview Avenue since 2011 and has made the change to ownership of its new Belcher Street location.

School director Johanna Mercer says size was the main reason to change locations and a major factor when considering new properties. Their current location is about 2,000-square feet, with next to no outdoor space. With 32 students, “it’s simply not big enough,” said Mercer.

“We’re bursting out of the seams; we’re using at least two rooms in the church wing (next door), and even then, we still don’t have the elbow room we need.”

In contrast, Mercer said the new space is about 6,000-square feet, not including its double garage, and sits on five acres of land. Although she doesn’t think the school will even need half of its new space initially, she’s very excited the potential for growth – and by the amount of room they will have outdoors.

“I think that’s probably going to be the most important thing for us,” Mercer said.

The move has the support of the parents of its students, many of whom contributed to the down payment on top of the tuition they were already paying. Mercer appreciates their support, and is pleased to have them invested in the school.

The building needs renovations before it is ready for use, primarily to meet fire codes. In the future, however, Mercer says she would also like to eventually finish the building’s basement.

“Our dream is that we might be able to offer a public after-school program, and offer (the space) to the community on evenings and weekends,” she added.

Kings County council is currently considering bylaw and planning strategy changes to allow for the Booker School to operate in the village.
