YARMOUTH, N.S. – There are many different ways of showing love and support. For a Yarmouth couple that’s had a very difficult past two years, one of these ways includes scaffolding, lots of people scraping and painting, and cans of paint and primer.
Millie Grace Robertson was born to Derek and Caroline Robertson on Dec. 23, 2016. During her short life she courageously endured multiple operations to address serious heart issues.
Millie passed away on May 2 after living a life that was far too short but very rich in love.
Her loss has left an aching hole in her parents’ lives and many others who came to know her through her mom's Caroline’s sharing of photos and descriptions on social media.
The many trips to hospitals in Halifax and Toronto that came with prolonged stays, coupled with work loss, left little time and money for needed maintenance on the large Cliff Street home the Robertson’s own.
Yarmouth resident Clark Sigfridson believed the community would be willing to help out.
He began making arrangements to bring a little colour into the lives of a couple who needed it.
On June 2, a community “prepping party” was held to scrape the Robertson’s house.
“It was fantastic and the response was humbling,” said Sigfridson.
“Amazing folks dedicated significant effort because they were moved on whatever level by this family. I just opened the door to allow folks in – people who wanted to share their time and energy for a family that moved them," he said.
In addition to the volunteers who turned out for the scraping party, close to a dozen businesses are donating either items or labour towards the project, which will include fixing rotten woodwork.
Contractor Daniel Jacquard is donating a portion of his efforts, however $7,000 still needs to be raised.
Sigfridson says he will accept donations at his C2 Café truck in the Yarmouth Canadian Tire parking lot mornings until noon or you can contact him on Facebook: Cafe x Clark.
