New Minas Celebration Days gets a big thumbs-up from Gabriella Patstone. Along with mom Erin, Gabriella wanted to include the events as part of her sixth birthday celebrations on Aug. 16.
While waiting for her turn to climb the rock wall, Patstone said she was having fun. She really enjoyed the hamster balls “because you could climb like a hamster.”
Hamster balls are big, clear plastic spheres inflated with air that you climb inside and, running like a hamster on all fours, move the ball forward along a track.
Celebration Days continued Saturday evening with live music and laser tag, closing with a bang - literally - with the fireworks. The evening activities were originally set for Friday but were postposed due to the threat of rain and thunderstorms.
New Minas Recreation Director John Ansara said that the forecast was calling for an 80 per cent chance of rain with a possibility of thundershowers for Friday evening so they decided to postpone, although it ended up being “beautiful all night.”
“We erred on the side of caution,” Ansara said Saturday afternoon. “It looks like it’s holding up today.”
He said he was pleased with a “really awesome turnout.” However, because they spaced activities out over a wider area than in the past, the crowd was more dispersed throughout Lockhart and Ryan Memorial Park this year.
Ansara said the rock-climbing wall and hamster balls were proving to be very popular activities.
