Paula Huntley is a perfect example to illustrate how one person “paying it forward” can have a positive impact on the life of a perfect stranger.

The Kentville resident has been a long-time fundraiser and supporter of breast cancer research. Huntley decided this year she would like to do something in addition to that cause, something to give back to her community.

“The community has allowed me to be successful at that and so I thought, something to go back to the community,” Huntley explained.

So she took to the Internet and, after seeing the Global Pay It Forward Movement, she knew she had her next goal.

But Huntley didn’t want to keep her random acts of kindness to just one day so she thought, what better way to keep paying it forward than to collect food and donate it to a local food bank?

April 24, despite the dreary, soggy weather Huntley collected more than 500 kilograms of food donations in just a few hours. . All of the food was then handed over to Bud Little who runs the food bank located behind St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Kentville.

Huntley’s original goal was to have the longest line of donations, but she said she got two things out of her cause: feeling good about what she had accomplished and also the feeing her initiative raised awareness about the importance of food banks in the community and of caring for and helping your neighbors.

“If we don’t help each other, who’s going to help us?” Huntley asked.

“It turned out even bigger than I had hoped,” Huntley said with a huge smile on her face.

She expressed appreciation for local radio’s stations assistance, too.

As well as donating food, many people also gave a monetary donation to the food bank.

Huntley wants everyone to know that she’s not just collecting donations today. While the Pay It Forward Movement is just for one day, Huntley hopes to keep the donations rolling in because “hunger is every day.”

If people are interesting in donating to the food bank they can contact Huntley at and she will get the donations to the food bank.
