Winners announced for Shelburne County Community and Business Excellence Awards

The winners of the 2017 Shelburne County Community and Business Excellence Awards were announced Oct. 24 at a gala banquet in Clyde River.

Five awards were presented.

Simply Country Decor, North East Point, was the recipient of the Artisan Entrepreneur Award. Fashion Fix Beauty Services, Barrington Passage, and Roscoe Ironworks, Shelburne had also been finalists in the Artisan Entrepreneur Award category.

The Artisan Entrepreneur Award recognizes a business that has advanced and promoted the re-emergence of the skilled artisan as a valuable and influential force in the business and economic community. This business focuses on the sale of unique, handmade products created with the artisan’s individual craftsmanship and technique.

Capt. Kat’s Lobster Shack, Barrington Passage was the recipient of the Rising Star Award. Freedom Canoe & Kayak, Woods Harbour and Lydgate Lock, Stock & Barrel General Store Ltd., Lockeport had also been finalists in the Rising Star Award category.

The Rising Star Award recognizes a business or social enterprise in Shelburne County that is locally owned and has been operating for three years or less, or has had a new owner within the past three years, and has shown innovation, and/or growth and success within our business community.

I. Deveau Fisheries Ltd., North East Point, received the Exporter of the Year Award.

The Exporter of the Year Award recognizes a business that has demonstrated excellence in exporting, has experienced noticeable growth in their overall business as a direct result of entering the global marketplace, and has made a significant contribution to development and growth of the local economy.

The winner of the Exporter of the Year Award will be recognized at the Nova Scotia Export Achievement Awards luncheon in Halifax in the Spring of 2018 where Nova Scotia companies, partners and industry professionals will come together to celebrate exporting success. During that event, one of the companies will be awarded the prestigious title of Nova Scotia Exporter of the Year.

H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Homes & Crematorium Ltd., Shelburne received the Small Business of the Year Award. The other finalists in this category had been A & C Auto Repair Ltd., Shelburne, and Spencer’s Garden Centre.

Smith & Watt Ltd., Barrington Passage was the recipient of the Large Business of the Year. Another finalist in this category had been Sea Star Seafoods Ltd., Clark’s Harbour.

The Small and Large Business of the Year Awards both recognize a business or social enterprise that has made significant and notable contributions to the community by providing meaningful employment, operational stability, vision, leadership and excellence in its sector.

The awards banquet was held at the River Hills Golf & Country Club in Clyde River. Guest speaker for the banquet was Heath Spencer, Executive Director of Shelburne Association Supporting Inclusion.

The Shelburne County Community and Business Excellence Awards is supported by the CBDC-Shelburne, Nova Scotia Community College, Nova Scotia Business Inc., Nova Scotia Works, Municipality of the District of Barrington, Municipality of the District of Shelburne, the Town of Shelburne and the Barrington and Shelburne Chambers of Commerce.
