It’s a community, one that she will dearly miss when new owners take over the Union Street Café and Wick Pub in March.

“We’ll really have to try hard to replace that sense of community in our lives. It’s not something that we take for granted,” said Osburn.

Osburn has been running the local eatery and live music venue with her sister, Meagan, since their mother, Anna, and aunt, Kate Adams, left the siblings to tend to the business in 2005.

“We feel incredibly grateful to have been able to work with the people that we’ve been able to work with in the restaurant,” said Osburn.

They’ve celebrated with people, watched families grow, hosted a wedding, welcomed award-winning musicians to their stage and even mourned with their regulars in times of grief.

“Some of the people who come in on almost a daily basis are people who have been coming for 15 years,” said Osburn.

“We’ve seen people celebrating and we’ve seen people at their worst. They always feel safe and they always feel taken care of and nurtured here.”

The gig catered to both Osburn’s love of cooking and passion for live music. She fondly remembers marveling at the sight of Ron Sexsmith, one of her all-time favourite musicians, performing on Union Street’s stage for the first time.

“I do remember really taking the time to be in the moment for that one.”

The combination pub, restaurant and music venue received the Select Nova Scotia Local Food Hero Award in 2010, was nominated for an East Coast Music Award for venue of the year in 2014 and earned a venue of the year nomination from Music Nova Scotia in 2015.

“A big part of the secret there is just treating musicians really well and realizing that it’s a partnership between us and them,” said Osburn.

The Osburn sisters, both residents of the North Mountain, recently announced Union Street’s own Lauren Franey and Virginia Fynes, of Fynes Designs, are preparing to take ownership in March.

Osburn was humbled to learn the announcement was met with “a huge sense of relief that the restaurant is not closing.”

She is proud of the business she created with her sister, and confident it will continue to be a cornerstone within the community of Berwick.

“We couldn’t be happier.”
