Lisa Nickerson is a repeat winner at IDEAS 2014 held at the Shelburne NSCC campus on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

The competition was open to all to encourage entrepreneurial-thinking, innovation and creativity. Their challenge: to develop an idea that excites them and has the potential of having business or community impact.  This could include a new product, invention, service, business venture or community service.

Nickerson, a 2nd Year Business Administration student from Bear Point, came up with an original concept to use waste to develop lobster bait for the lucrative fishery in southwestern Nova Scotia.

She was the first place finalist at last year’s competition as well.

Nine Shelburne Campus competitors were vying for the winning title. Their submissions were presented and judged by a panel comprised of local business owners and community partners.

Nickerson received a cash prize and will advance to the Provincial IDEAS Competition on March 20 in Halifax.

The second place finisher was business administration student Graham Nickerson whose concept involved using mink manure to grow algae. Christina Stoddard, a student in office administration, was the third place finisher.

Judges for the event included representatives from municipal units and NSCC businesses partners.

Shelburne town councillor Elizabeth Rhuland noted that the competition offered students an opportunity to practice their business pitching skills.

“It takes a lot of nerve to stand up here and pitch your sales opportunity,” she said. “If you’re planning to pursue this …it will be the first of many presentations.”
